Why Am I Running Again?

There’s one question I get asked a lot. Why? Why am I running when I don’t know what the future holds? When trustees aren’t at the table, what can I actually do?

It’s a fair question, and I've asked it myself. More than once. I touched on it here. But the biggest reason I’m running is that I believe your voice still matters.

We elect trustees to represent our communities, ask questions, and make decisions, mostly in public. I believe you should continue to have that say, including the right to decide who represents you at the school board. I don't think that boards across Ontario should be overseen remotely from Toronto.

And I also know there is still meaningful work I can do.

Families still turn to me for help navigating the system and finding the right person to talk to. I can help make sense of board policies, explain how decisions affect students, and raise concerns when something doesn’t seem right. I know there are families still counting on me, and I don't want to let them down.

As Vice Chair of the Western Region with the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA), I also work alongside trustees from across Ontario to advocate for public education.

The challenges TVDSB is experiencing are part of a much bigger provincial conversation and I have serious concerns about the impact of supervision on the accountability for not just us but for seven other boards.

I’m also proud of the work we had begun before supervision. There was more to do, and most of that could not be shared publicly, but I know we were addressing difficult issues. I’ve definitely learned a great deal, and I want to put that experience to work as we move forward.

Would walking away be easier? Some days, absolutely. But I still care about the students in our schools, the families trying to support them, and the staff doing this work every day. I still believe strong public education needs local voices and people willing to listen, learn, and ask difficult questions.

I can’t promise what the next term will look like, but I can promise that I’ll keep showing up, I'll keep helping wherever I can, and I'll keep speaking up for a public education system that serves all students.

So that’s why I’m running. That's why I believe your vote still matters. And that's why I'm asking for you to trust me with it on October 26th.
